What to Expect at the Clinic

The Got Bustos? motto is: “See It, Feel It, Fix It”

This is something that Crystl and instructors take to heart. They let the players “see” what they are teaching, “feel” how their body should feel when doing the exercise and give the tools to “fix it” if they are not doing it correctly.

The Got Bustos? clinics started as “Weekend with Gold” back in 2005 with the help of Mary Ellen Bonner who is now our clinic coordinator. From that one clinic the response to Crystl and her method of teaching was tremendous, but more importantly reaching out to the players that weekend turned into Got Bustos? Sports Training, LLC.

Crystl’s goal has always been to give the players a lot of quality time and training with a limited number of players at a cost that is affordable. It’s always been quality, not quantity with Crystl. We set up our clinics with separate stations. We try to limit the stations to 4-6 players. Crystl and her instructors teach proper throwing and fielding mechanics, which all corresponds with hitting and the rest of the clinic Crystl instructs the players through her “Seven Steps of Hitting.”

Players of the same skill level are put together in stations. The clinics start out with Crystl and the instructors demonstrating a specific drill. The girls then return to their station to work on that drill with an instructor. As Crystl and/or Howard walk around they check to see if all the players understand that particular drill. If not she brings them back together and does another demo. Then back to their group. If there are still players who are struggling she will then put them individually with an instructor until they understand what she is teaching.

In each clinic Crystl always takes time at the end of the session to take pictures with each player (and she lets them wear her Olympic Medals in the picture) and autographs. I have never seen Crystl leave a session without making sure each player gets a picture and something signed. Sometimes that means she signs item after item for the same player.

Each player leaves a Got Bustos? clinic feeling not like they just had a workout with the best hitter on the planet but also made a new friend.

Education and training are both important to all of the Got Bustos? staff and Crystl takes time to talk to the players and explain what having good grades can mean. She also makes it known that she believes it takes a lot of hard work and you have to be willing to put in the time and effort in order to succeed.

Crystl’s motto is: “At the end of the day there is no one to blame but yourself for something you do or do not get”.

Honestly, I hadn’t planned on going.  The coaches clinic was late on Sunday evening at a place about an hour away from where I live and I had to wake up at 5:00am the next morning.  However, I got a call from Coach Tony (the coach I’ve worked with for years at Kapolei) encouraging me to come to the clinic.  I also have to thank Coach Kent of Chaminade University for making it all possible!

I ended up talking to my husband – I wasn’t about to drive all that way at night by myself – and we both went to the clinic.  It started at 7pm and we didn’t leave there until after 10pm.  Listening to both coaches and and their players (via video) was super cool.   I honestly could not believe how much energy they both had after two long days of clinic sessions at the field! It was impressive and cool.

I can honestly say, that I’ve never been to any type of coaches clinic and been disappointed.  Even if I had no idea what I’d be getting out of it or had no idea what the philosophy or the strengths of the speakers were, I have always come away happy I went!  ANY time you have a chance to attend a clinic or a camp, especially where speakers or instructors have something to say specifically for coaches, take advantage of it! I only wish there were more clinics and camps closer to home that I could get to more often!

Participating pitchers can now attend this 2-day clinic for just $50 (includes BOTH days!).

• Saturday: clinic/instructional session (3 time slots to choose from)

I know there were some parents who were worried about cost – this clinic is only $5. It doesn’t get much better than that. You can’t go wrong!

I’m still looking for a good location for the Saturday dates. I do have a field reserved, but I would like to get a spot closer to town. I have been in touch with a few people about other options and once I have finalized my decision on the Saturday locations, I will let you know.

Last time, we had WAY too many girls in each session, so this year EACH clinic session (20th & 21st) is limited to just 10-12 girls. That’s why we are running two days worth of clinic sessions – so that we can make more than just 10-12 slots per age group available. One session for each age group will run on Saturday and another session will run on Sunday.

The clinic is $35 for participating pitchers (must supply your own catcher). This fee is good for ONE session. Parents, coaches, non-participating pitchers are FREE.

Also – in order to secure a spot in a Small Group session (on the 27th with no more than 4 pitchers per session), you MUST attend one of the clinic sessions.

The other clinic is the pitching clinic I’m putting on with Bill Hillhouse of HouseofPitching.com. He was here a few years ago and many people wanted to have him come again. We couldn’t swing it last year, but he will be here again in September. The clinic sessions will be on Sept. 20 & 21. The small group sessions will run on the following Saturday, Sept. 27th. I don’t have the eact time and location yet, but other important information is already up at www.allaboutfastpitch.com/Bill2008.html. When times, locations, and registration forms are available, they will be up at that link.

Last time we had just one day of clinic sessions and that was not enough, so that is why we’re doing clinic sessions on the 20th and the 21st. On top of that we want to be able to keep the groups of pitchers down to just 10-12 per session, so we needed to be able to offer more sessions. Last time we had about 15 per session and that was just way too much. So even though we are offering two days worth of sessions, space IS LIMITED and will fill up very quickly. So keep the dates open and be ready to register once the forms come out. I’ll post it here on the blog when that’s ready and I will also send out notification via the mailing list if you are on it.

We’re looking at September 20-21 for the clinic sessions (2 – 2 1/2 hours) and the following Saturday (27th) for small group sessions. Just like last time, in order to attend a small group session, you MUST attend a clinic session first.

I’m not quite sure on location yet, but we’re looking at the CORP again and possibly another field in town. Ideally we’ll be able to do CORP one day and the town field another day to make it easier for pitchers from different parts of the island to attend a session.

Most likely will run something similar to what we did two years ago. Clinic sessions will be offered by age group. One session will be for ages 10-12, another will be for 13-15, and the last for ages 16+. We’ll run those 3 sessions on Saturday (20th) and if you can’t make the Saturday date, we’ll run them again on Sunday (21st).

Clinic sessions will be limited to 10-12 girls EACH. This is part of why we are running it for two days because 10-12 spots per age group will fill up FAST. So one session of 10-12 girls will be available on Saturday and another will be available on Sunday. Last time we had 14-16 per session and that was too much. This year, we’re only allowing 10-12 per session so that your pitcher will get more attention during the clinic and get more out of it. Also remember, all pitchers MUST bring their own catcher.

As we get closer and closer to the clinic I will provide additional information (finalized location and pricing). Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the clinic. All clinic sessions will be FREE for ANY coaches or parents that want to attend. Bill’s demonstrations during his clinics are very cool, so please come by if you have the chance. There is no charge to anyone who wants to come to see the demonstration and instruction. Only the pitchers that actually go out onto the field and go through drills and get instruction from Bill pay the clinic fee.

Cost to the pitchers will probably be about $40 to attend a 2-hour clinic session in the appropriate age group on the 20th OR 21st. Small group sessions (27th) are one hour long and Bill will work with just your group (up to 4 pitchers) for that full hour. These sessions will probably be about $140. Small group sessions will be VERY limited as we will only run them on one day, so once we finalize location and start taking applications, please don’t wait too long.

It was interesting to me because a lot of what he talked about makes sense. There’s quite a bit that I do, but never saw taught. It’s another eye opener about how I, as a coach, overlook some things that need to be taught. Since they were not taught to it doesn’t dawn on me that some players need to have such things explained.

Anyway, I loved the concepts he presented to the kids. I could see that there was a TON covered in a short period of time. I can also see why players would sign up for lessons vs just go to a clinic with him. I don’t think even I was able to soak up everything that was covered in just that one session. I liked being at the clinic because it gave me a better idea of how to TEACH better skills to the players I work with, and, of course, to my own daughter. I only wish I was able to jump in with the girls.

At any rate, Howard, if you’re ever back in town for a clinic or, if and when you start giving lessons in Hawaii, I’ll be there.

HIGH LEVEL COURSE NEXT WEEK AT ISF

One week from today [Dec. 6], 34 coaches from 17 different countries will be in attendance for the start of the International Coaching College. This edition is for the Americas, although seven of the attendees are coming from other regions.

Being held at the ISF world headquarters in Plant City, Florida, the four-day course is a high-level session put on in partnership with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Three months ago the ICC for Asia/Oceania was held in Australia, and next month Italy will host the college being offered for attendees from Africa/Europe. Those registered for next week are coming from Aruba, Bahamas, Belize, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Spain, U.S. Virgin Islands, USA, and Venezuela.

Softball players and fans are excited about the PFX Tour coming to central Florida October 19 – 21. The PFX Tour combines tournament games for all age groups and a college showcase but the bonus attraction is the PFX Tour players and their exhibition game.
